De dag dat John Kennedy vermoord werd: herinnering van Jan Willem Minderhout

Nu het bijna 50 jaar geleden is, denk ik terug aan die gedenkwaardige dag in de novembermaand van 1963. De dag dat president Kennedy van de Verenigde Staten vermoord werd en mijn broer in Amsterdam trouwde. De speling van het lot bepaalde dat dit op dezelfde dag plaats vond, de 22e. November. Herinnering aan 'The day John Kennedy died' van mijn vader.

Die dag in november vormde ook het eind van een korte verlof periode die ik, als scheepswerktuigkundige, kreeg vanwege de geboorte van mijn jongste zoon. Het huwelijk van mijn broer viel voor mij op een makkelijke dag omdat ik, vanuit Middelburg, via de waterschout in Amsterdam, waar ik moest aanmonsteren voor de Artemis van de KNSM, naar de bruiloft van mijn broer kon. Via de afdeling personeelszaken van de rederij werden de kapitein en de hoofdwerktuigkundige verteld dat ik kort voor het vertrek van het schip in dienst zou komen.

Vroeg in de ochtend vertrok ik van huis in Middelburg, door de vrieskou, om een vroege trein te nemen. Een voettocht van ongeveer twee kilometer, naar het station, met een zware koffer. Mijn moeder vertrok later met een vriend van mijn broer en zijn vrouw, een zakenman die toen al een auto had, naar Amsterdam.

De treinreis verliep vlot, het aanmonsteren ook. Aan boord gekomen zette ik met een zucht mijn koffer in mijn hut neer. Ik maakte kennis met de machinisten en de kapitein die me vertelde dat het schip diep in de nacht zou vertrekken. Als ik omstreeks elf uur in de avond aan boord kwam, zou dit ruim op tijd zijn.

Omdat het uur van vertrek zo laat viel verliet ik het schip met een prettig gevoel. Ik besloot me te trakteren op een taxiritje naar de plek waar het huwelijk gesloten zou worden. De rit ging van de Surinamekade naar de Prinsengracht waar het Amsterdamse stadhuis is. Ik was er ruim op tijd, de belangstellenden verzamelden zich maar het bruidspaar kwam niet op de tijd van de huwelijksvoltrekking. Na een poosje wachten vertelde een gemeentebode dat het huwelijk even uitgesteld was omdat de bruidegom, mijn broer dus, naar het ziekenhuis was gegaan. Dat even bleek een uurtje te zijn waarna een iets bleke bruidegom met aanhang alsnog verscheen. Wat was er gebeurd? Bij het ophangen van het laatste lijstje in zijn woning had hij het spijkertje, tijdens het in de muur slaan, los gelaten. Dit stukje metaal viel rechtstreeks door zijn geopende mond in zijn maag. Probeer het zelf maar. Als je op je tenen staand een spijkertje in de muur wilt slaan dan gaat je mond vanzelf open. Volgens de artsen zat het spijkertje op een goede plek zodat zijn huwelijk door kon gaan maar wel bijna zonder mij….

Ik zat voor de gelegenheid knap in het pak en had voor het eerst een broek aan met een gulp zonder knoopjes maar met een rits. Vanwege de lange wachttijd moest ik nog even naar het toilet. Ik trok toen ik klaar was, gebogen staand, in haast mijn rits op waardoor mijn overhemd klem raakte te zitten en ik niet meer rechtop kon staan. Na eerst zelf het probleem vergroot te hebben door aan de rits te snokken, merkte een vriendelijke toiletjuffrouw me op. Ze had alle begrip voor mijn probleem, uit ervaring denk ik, knielde voor me neer en zorgde ervoor dat ook ik als getuige op tijd aanwezig was.

Verder was het een gezellige dag met een goed diner waarbij het wat men nu noemt: "Prinsengrachtpubliek” ruimschoots aanwezig was. De bruid kwam uit een gegoede Amsterdamse familie! Zelfs "DE "Freddie Heineken was aanwezig. Freddie gaf aan het economisch nog zwakke bruidspaar een centimeters dikke vloerbedekking cadeau. Ik stelde me zo voor dat de rest van het op het Waterlooplein gekochte interieur hierop wel schamel zou afsteken.

Omstreeks half tien, in de avond, had de vriend van mijn broer zoveel gedronken dat hij onmogelijk nog naar Middelburg kon rijden en naar een hotel wou. Een van de aanwezigen, een theosoof, dus wel een beetje wereldvreemd, wist een hotelletje boven een friettent, in de buurt van de Achtergracht, waar altijd ruimte was. Omdat het ook voor mij tijd werd om naar boord te gaan liepen we samen, de zakenman met zijn vrouw, mijn moeder en ik van de feestzaal aan de Amstel naar het hotelletje.

De juffrouw achter de toonbank keek erg vreemd toen ik haar vroeg of er nog twee kamers vrij waren. Ze riep de baas er bij die op een aarzelende wijze bevestigde dat hij nog twee kamers beschikbaar had en vroeg of we hem wilden volgen. Via een draaitrap, met uitgesleten treden, kwamen we in een kamer waar we even moesten wachten totdat hij onze kamers in orde had gemaakt. Om de tijd te doden bestelden we nog maar een pilsje ofschoon we geen pils meer
konden zien. Plots stommelde een stel vanaf een hogere verdieping de trap af. De man keek zeer wazig en de vrouw dacht kennelijk aan haar volgende klant… We begrepen dat we op het verkeerde adres waren.

Ik ging vlug naar boven waar de eigenaar de kamer, die juist vrij gekomen was, in orde bracht. De man stond gebogen over het bed de lakens glad te strijken. Op een waskast met marmeren blad, stond een elektrische straalkachel gericht naar het bed. Zo´n verchroomde schijf die op een TV-schotel lijkt, een vergelijking die ik toen nog niet kon maken. Ik haalde de eigenaar uit zijn concentratie met de opmerking dat je op zijn kamers geen koude rug zou krijgen. Hij sprong op maar was kennelijk opgelucht toen ik hem zei dat zijn hotel niet het hotel was wat we wilden. Hij vertelde me vervolgens dat hij niet wist hoe hij ons had moeten uitleggen dat we op het verkeerde adres waren zo staande in de friettent.

Uiteindelijk zijn we op het Rembrandtplein gekomen waar mijn moeder en het echtpaar onderdak vonden in een normaal hotel. Ik nam vervolgens afscheid van hen. Toen ik aan boord kwam hoorde ik dat Kennedy vermoord was en gingen we op reis.

Ik weet, nog steeds, precies wat ik deed op die dag in november. De dag dat president Kennedy vermoord werd.

De loopings van de PvdA in het JSF-dossier

Er lijkt na zeventien jaar gesteggel eindelijk duidelijkheid te zijn over de opvolging van de F16: de JSF. Helaas is nog steeds niet duidelijk of dit werkelijk de beloofde beste keus is: de JSF zou zowel het goedkoopste als het modernste vliegtuig moeten zijn. De PvdA heeft in het verleden de nodige loopings gemaakt in het JSF-dossier. Hoewel de JSF officieel nooit als optie is verlaten, wekte de partij naar de buitenwereld toch sterk die indruk. Nu de kogel door de kerk lijkt te zijn is er zelfs sprake van stuntvliegen door de politieke leiding. Alleen defensiewoordvoerder Angelien Eijsink lijkt haar hoofd koel te houden: eerst duidelijkheid en dan pas beslissen.

Toen de Tweede Kamer in 2002 op voorstel van het tweede kabinet-Kok besloot om mee te werken aan het JSF-project (System Development and Demonstration-fase) schetste Bart Tromp reeds dat de hooggespannen verwachtingen wel eens lelijk tegen zouden kunnen vallen. ‘De financiële onderbouwing deugt niet, het werkgelegenheidseffect is verwaarloosbaar en de beloofde technologie-overdracht gaat richting VS, in plaats van omgekeerd.’ Het JSF-project heeft Nederland nodig - niet andersom, schreef Tromp. Meedoen met de ontwikkeling van het toestel zou de aanschaf vrijwel onvermijdelijk maken.

In 2007 stelde de fractie de defensienota In dienst van Nederland in dienst van de wereld vast. Hierin werd een consequente keus gemaakt voor taakspecialisatie en integratie in EU- en NAVO-verband. De nota waarschuwt voor het gevaar dat ‘grote investeringen de organisatie voor jaren committeert en daardoor zijn aanpassingsvermogen op veranderde omstandigheden verliest.’

De nota van de destijds in de oppositie verkerende PvdA had weinig impact maar defensiewoordvoerder Angelien Eijsink, het voor de nota verantwoordelijk kamerlid, heeft wel altijd in die geest gehandeld. In het laatste verkiezingsprogramma van de PvdA staat dan ook dat ‘verlenging van de levensduur van de F16 mogelijk is en onze voorkeur heeft. Te zijner tijd zullen we keuzes maken ten aanzien van het gewenste type toestel op basis van het dan beschikbare aanbod en prijzen, passend in onze visie op de toekomst van de krijgsmacht, zonder dat daarbij sprake is van een voorkeur voor de JSF.’

Toen in de aanloop naar Prinsjesdag de indruk werd gewekt dat de keus voor de JSF gemaakt was, fronsten veel PvdA-leden hun wenkbrauwen. Was dan al duidelijk welke rol de Nederlandse defensie wil spelen en waarom de JSF daarin past? Waren nu echt alle financiële en operationele risico’s van het JSF-project verleden tijd? Wat voor krijgsmacht wil Nederland hebben? Een ‘krijgsmachtje van alle kunde’ kwalitatief hoogwaardig, maar kwantitatief marginaal, zoals sommige defensiespecialisten vrezen? (Margriet Drent en Dick Zandee, Internationale Spectator, september 2013).

Om het gemor van de achterban te pareren werden op drie plaatsen in het land bijeenkomsten georganiseerd om op dit soort vragen antwoord te geven. Ik bezocht de bijeenkomst in Den Haag waar kamerlid Michiel Servaes de moeilijke taak had om te reageren op een nog niet bekendgemaakt regeringsstandpunt. Hij verklaarde dat de fractie uiteraard nog veel vragen had over de inpassing van de opvolger van de F16 in de krijgsmacht en de overwegingen waarop de keus voor die opvolger gebaseerd was.

Groot was daarom mijn verbazing toen Diederik Samsom op de avond van Prinsjesdag verklaarde dat de JSF nu eenmaal de beste keus was. Waar was die bewering ineens op gebaseerd? Een dag later gooide de Algemene Rekenkamer roet in het eten. Deze constateerde onder meer dat de aanschafkosten van de JSF nog verre van duidelijk waren. ’s Avonds verklaarde Diederik Samsom bij Pauw en Witteman dat het Rekenkamer-rapport zoveel twijfel had gezaaid dat een definitieve keuze voor de JSF toch nog niet gemaakt kon worden. Ongeveer tegelijkertijd verklaarde minister Plasterk bij Umberto Tan dat de JSF ongetwijfeld de beste keus was. De coördinatie bleek te wensen over te laten.

Tijdens de politieke ledenraad probeerde Samsom olie op de golven te gooien door het belang van de keus te relativeren: ‘Op straat heeft niemand het er over.’ Nu die keus toch gemaakt moest worden liep hij er niet voor weg. Gelukkig was defensiewoordvoerder Angelien Eijsink een stuk duidelijker. Zij stelde de volgende eisen: ‘Maak duidelijk wat de opvolger van de F16 moet kunnen. Beredeneer hoeveel we er nodig hebben. Overtuig ons ervan dat het binnen de daarvoor beschikbare begroting kan zonder de rest van de krijgsmacht ‘op te eten.’ De werkgelegenheidseffecten noemde ze belangrijk maar niet doorslaggevend.

De ‘methode Eijsink’ kan mogelijk de angel uit het JSF-debat halen. In tegenstelling tot wat velen meenden maakt de VVD er geen prestigekwestie van. Minister Hennis kijkt niet bepaald enthousiast terug op het ontwikkeltraject waarin Nederland participeerde en premier Rutte noemde in de pers de twijfel van dePvdA ‘logisch’.

De opvolging van de F16 kan inderdaad een technische kwestie zijn. Een besluit dat logisch voortvloeit uit de rol die wij onze krijgsmacht willen laten spelen op het wereldtoneel en de hoeveelheid geld dat wij daarvoor over hebben. Over dat laatste zou de discussie moeten gaan.

Maar als de JSF net zulke indrukwekkende loopings kan maken als de PvdA-fractie dan is er maar een conclusie mogelijk: aanschaffen dat toestel!

Aanschaf JSF is bedreiging Nederlandse defensie.

Een ‘nee’ tegen de JSF is geen ‘pacifistische reflex’ maar een uiting van zorg voor een enorme gok die de toekomst van het Nederlandse defensieapparaat in gevaar kan brengen.

 

Toen de Tweede Kamer in 2002 besloot om mee te werken aan het JSF-project (System Development and Demonstration-fase (SDD) ) schetste Bart Tromp reeds dat de hooggespannen verwachtingen wel eens lelijk tegen zouden kunnen vallen. ‘De financiële onderbouwing deugt niet, het werkgelegenheidseffect is verwaarloosbaar en de beloofde technologie-overdracht gaat richting VS, in plaats van omgekeerd.’ 1)

In dit artikel wees hij ondermeer op eerdere fiasco’s om een alleskunner te ontwikkelen (‘een toestel voor luchtmacht, marine en mariniers’) en zet hij vraagtekens bij het nut van dit soort toestellen voor de hedendaagse oorlogvoering. De ontwikkeling van drones (toen nog ‘Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles’ (Ucafs) genoemd) zou dit soort vliegtuigen grotendeels overbodig kunnen maken. ‘Het JSF-project heeft Nederland nodig - niet andersom’ schreef Tromp. Meedoen met de ontwikkeling van het toestel zou de aanschaf vrijwel onvermijdelijk maken. In 2002 is Nederland met open ogen in de fuik gezwommen.

Voormalig defensiewoordvoerder Bert Kreemers die in 2009 op de aanschaf van gevechtsvliegtuigen promoveerde 2) verklaarde in een interview in De Leunstoel 3) ‘Het allerbelangrijkste is echter dat we eens goed nagaan wat we kunnen betalen. We hebben nu zevenentachtig F-16’s. Volgens de plannen schaffen we vijfentachtig JSF’s aan. Maar we hebben maar budget voor veertig JSF’s. In feite zijn die vliegtuigen de bestaansreden voor de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Straks hebben we dus een organisatie van zo’n zevenduizend man om veertig vliegtuigen in de lucht te houden.’ Dat zijn er nu blijkbaar slechts 35 geworden. 4) And counting? De kosten zijn nog ongewis maar het budget blijft gelijk. Kreemers zegt in datzelfde interview: ‘bepaal eerst wat je nodig hebt en onderzoek hoelang de F-16’s nog mee kunnen. Als er dan vliegtuigen vervangen moeten worden koop ze dan ‘van de plank’.

De PvdA leek ook van een dergelijke aanpak overtuigd te zijn. Juist om een slagvaardige krijgsmacht overeind te kunnen houden moesten er scherpe keuzes worden gemaakt. In 2007 zag de – aan de destijds recent overleden Bart Tromp opgedragen – defensienota ‘In dienst van Nederland in dienst van de wereld’ het licht. Daarin werd een consequente keus voor taakspecialisatie gemaakt: ’een krijgsmacht die over voldoende middelen beschikt om in het middenspectrum op te treden. Een krijgsmacht die – zoals in de Grondwet is vastgelegd – door inzet in internationaal verband de internationale rechtsorde bevordert en in ons eigen land, maar ook daarbuiten in noodsituaties de helpende hand kan bieden’. De nota waarschuwt voor het gevaar dat ‘grote investeringen de organisatie voor jaren committeren en dat die daardoor zijn aanpassingsvermogen verliest.’ 5) In de nota wordt niet expliciet afscheid genomen van het JSF-project, maar er wordt beargumenteerd dat Nederland kan volstaan met 54 F-16’s die geleidelijk kunnen worden vervangen door nieuwe vliegtuigen.

Nu heeft het er alle schijn van dat de keus voor de JSF al gemaakt is. Is dan ook al ergens te lezen welke rol de Nederlandse defensie wil spelen en waarom de JSF daar in past? Zijn nu echt alle financiële en operationele risico’s van het JSF-project verleden tijd? ‘Je kunt niet een krijgsmacht opbouwen als je niet weet wat de opvolger van de F-16 gaat kosten’, constateert defensiespecialist Co Kolijn. 6)

 

Een nee tegen de JSF is geen pacifistische reflex. Doorgaan op deze weg bergt het risico in zich dat Nederland zich blijft committeren aan een geldverslindend project dat de totale krijgsmacht in onbalans brengt. Het lijkt mij uiterst onverstandig om die gok te wagen.

Tweede Brief uit Egpte / Second Letter from Egypt.

I received this second letter from an Egyptian acquaintance who gave me permission to publish it anonymously. I present it to you without any edits, but I omitted the names mentioned. I gather it to be an important document right from the heart of an 'average Egyptian woman'. Second letter from Egypt

I wanted to write you separately and off the public wall, as i think it is important that people like you - who seem genuinely concerned for the safety and wellbeing of the Egyptian people - understand what is happening on the ground, and all that is contributing to the general emotions at the moment.

It is very hard to explain the nightmare we are in right now... It is surreal. In the space of one month, our world has been turned upside down. We are watching things happen on our tvs that defy logic or human decency... I don't know how comprehensive a picture of what is truly happening in Egypt is reaching you in Europe, as from what we can tell - it is only the MB side of the story that is being told there. And not just that, but that it is fraught with lies and deception.

For example, are you aware that in the months leading up to the final count of petitions calling for the withdrawal of confidence from Mohamed Morsi (final count was over 22 million, while he was voted in by 11-12 million), the MB have been stepping up their rhetoric and scare tactics to frighten people not to sign or to go down in the rally marches on 30th June? Not just that, they kept trying to turn people against one another, by claiming that it was the Christians who were betraying their country, or that the Shiites (of which we have a miniscule community) were trying to “pollute” Egypt with their “filthy mutation of Islam”, etc, etc....

When they failed in causing sectarian strife, they began to try a different tactic of “it’s really the agents of the old regime that are trying to steal the revolution from us” , etc, etc… That didn’t work either. Then, a few days before 30 June, Morsi attended a rally that was allegedly designed to show support for Syria, where they announced that they had been supporting the Syrian rebels with money and arms for the past year. Morsi also said that we had severed ties with Syria and that we would be sending our army to fight in Syria. That was the cover, but really, the rally intended to scare of the Egyptian public of what would be their fate if they attempted to defy Morsi .

The rally was attended by not one single political figure at all other than their only remaining political allies who were – without exception (and I am NOT exaggerating, Sofia) - a collection of Egypt’s known terrorists, every last one of which had previously been convicted for the murder of Egyptian citizens, whether security men or ordinary individuals. Among them, the killers of the late Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. During this rally, The main people on the stage with him called the Egyptian Shiites “filth” and “scum” and said “they deserved to be exterminated”, etc, etc… Also on stage, their religious leaders called all those who defied Morsi “infidels and heretics” and “apostates from the Islamic faith” as well as “traitors & lice”… They actually started a group curse or prayer against “these worms” (by this, they meant the Egyptian population who no longer trusted Morsi)..

All the while, Morsi was sat on the stage all night long smiling and did not utter ONE WORD of condemnation as those people were inciting violence against his very own public; or when they were cursing the public in group chants, calling them infidels and heretics and traitors…

Not even two days later, four Egyptian Shiites were murdered by a group of people in the most brutal fashion in a siege that went on for several hours. After that, the preachers on their various channels came out and justified these brutal murders, claiming that God’s work was being done to protect the Sunni faith in Egypt (their new ploy was to try get a Sunni/Shiite divide going, as they had failed with the Muslim/Christian one). And not one single word of condemnation came out of the presidential palace from Morsi. And all the while during this period, their preachers and activists on all of their channels had been calling OUTWARDLY for violence against anyone defying Morsi! Their leaders even said so openly ON RECORD, that Egypt would be plunged into a reign of terror, and that they would ‘burn Egypt to the ground’ if Morsi was removed…

Then, the night before 30 June rallies, Morsi gave a speech, which effectively threatened the Egyptian public with acts of terror against the state and the people themselves if they came out against Morsi on the 30th June. For your information, even though the date for the mass rallies was 30 June, the public couldn’t even wait that long, and squares all across Egypt (even in former MB heartlands) began filling up two or three days before.. The air was electric with anticipation during this period.

However, since the removal of Morsi, do you realize that we have literally been in a state of seige in our own country by their terrorists running amok in all the cities? And Sofia - it is fair to call them terrorists when they carry weapons and threaten (if you are lucky) anti-Morsi supporters - or hurt or kill them, if you are very unlucky! Do you know that I do not linger too long in my balcony when things heat up for fear of being hit by a stray bullet from their supporters, or even an intended sniper attack? I am not alone, everyone I know is the same. Many people have actually died by sniper fire coming into their homes from MB ‘s intentionally shooting at them.

The last such case was highly publicized because he happened to be the younger brother of a television presenter in Egypt. The young man was filming the armed MB supporters on a (15th May) bridge that were shooting automatic and sniper rifles randomly on the people in the street below, and more directly at the people in the balconies overlooking the bridge.. The footage in his phone camera shows that one of the gunmen whose face was not concealed looks up & appears to see him directly filming them. Then he motions to one of the snipers and seconds after, the man was killed with a bullet that entered through the underside of his jaw and came out of the top of his head. His is not a unique story, but one that became known more widely because of his family ties. He was only 32 years old.

Other than that, we have LITERALLY been too scared to leave our houses unless absolutely necessary because their protestors are everywhere. Sofia, there is a general air of tense and stressful anxiety in the air. Everyone is scared to venture out, or to engage with anyone in the street… I have seen them with my very eyes from my own balcony, as I live behind a police station.. They come in huge numbers of men who are armed and attack full force. They also use megaphones to intimidate the police and you should hear some of the insults they shout at the police, or the accusations and curses they yell at them… You need to know that although the MB may be very medieval and barbaric in their thinking, but they are machines who follow instruction down to the last detail, because of their “to hear is to obey” creed! They have been engaging in a very well thought out and executed campaign to attack and destroy all state institutions and vital infrastructure, as well as to spread terror among the population. They are attacking churches, burning police stations and security checkpoints…

Police have intercepted bombs outside some police stations, and more terrifyingly – in Cairo’s main water and gas plants. They are also attacking railroads.. They are targeting police and army forces in a concentrated campaign in the exact same way as did their Jihadi terrorist allies in the 1990s terror campaign in Egypt. The worst part of all, is when you hear their supporters on tv – it is shocking, because they are totally brainwashed and say things that make no sense whatsoever!! And this part, I blame on the Mubarak Regime. In his 30 years in power, he effectively destroyed our educational system, driving our population into ignorance and illiteracy… Worse than that, the percentage of population living under the poverty line, with no access to a decent living, jobs or the most basic of health care rose exponentially under his rule. The end result was the combustible mix of absolute ignorance, abject poverty and an inflamed sense of resentment & hatred towards society and the ‘haves’. All these elements, as you know are fertile breeding grounds for radial extremism.

Please keep in mind that the perpetrators are people who are supposed to be Egyptian like us! The reality of it is that they belong to a cult that knows no loyalty or love to its sovereign state or countrymen, but ONLY to its fellow cult members & blind, unwaiving loyalty to the leaders. Also, they are exhibiting more animal like pack mentality and behavior… They have upped the violence levels and are attacking (mainly) policemen in greater numbers and in frenzied action.. Their victims are tortured while they are still alive in blood chilling manner, and then their bodies are maimed and mutilated and dragged through the streets, or hanged from trees or lamposts, afterwards…

There have also been a number of frenzied type attacks (besides the growing number of civilian deaths by bird shot, random fire and sniper bullets) on ordinary citizens for no logical reason whatsoever. Like that unbelievably poor taxi or minibus driver on the Alexandrian promenade, who was in his car when it was set upon by an armed & angry mob of pro-Morsi supporters. The reasons still unknown, they destroyed his vehicle, pulled him out of it and beat him to death with sticks and other instruments and tore at him with their hands…

There was another taxi/bus driver who was with him, in his own vehicle too, but he was the lucky one. His car was also destroyed and he was set upon by them, but by the grace of God he was able to escape with his life.. You should have seen his interview on TV, he was visibly, terrified and deeply shaken and was in obvious shock and confusion. But at the end of the day, he was alive, unlike his friend. There is no reason or explanation for this mass murder.. And you know what else, Sofia? There was no form of apology from any of the MB figureheads or known sympathisers either…

Which brings me to my point! And WHY did I spend all this time (about 2 hours) explaining this to you, you are probably thinking? Its because I am trying very hard, with all my posts on Facebook to give the outside world insight into what is presently TRULY happening in Egypt, and what our present state of mind is, in this current climate.. All this upheaval did not happened recently. We are still in living it and trying to understand and come to terms with it. And of course, we are trying to survive it and pray that our armed forces can overcome these terrorists before they turn our country into a wholly lawless and violent territory as Syria and/or Somalia.! We are at war with a terrorist cult that is DETERMINED to destroy their country and kill and frighten as many Egyptian people in the process as possible. So how then, in the middle of all this carnage, fear and anger can the west honestly and realistically expect us to be entertaining reconciliation, and accepting the MB back into the fold with open arms and hearts? It is absolutely illogical! If it is still hard to comprehend, then I will compare with examples that carry huge similarities and which can put things into better perspective for you:

It is like asking the Jewish people of Europe in the 1940s to forgive the Nazis for their persecution, murder and internment of hundreds of thousands, millions of them in concentration camps at THE TIME these atrocities were taking place! Or let me bring it closer to home for you.. During the German occupation of France in WW2, when they had installed the puppet Vichy Administration.. Could anyone tolerate this government or its members? What happened to these people once Germany lost the war? Not just these people – what happened to the French women who were involved with German soldiers – and at the hands of ordinary French citizens, at that? As for reconciliation and being allowed back into the political process - the Nazis where annihilated as a political and social movement for over the next half century! Even today – almost 70 years after the end of the war, there is STILL much residual dislike for Germans as a whole…(I have done a fair part of my growing up in Europe and am not unaware of such delicate nuances of sentiment).

For heaven’s sake - a Dutch friend of mine recently opted against the first choice of name for her baby as it was deemed ‘too German’! My German friends have had to endure name calling while on school trips inside Europe, etc.. And all this is 70 YEARS later, Sofia, and the slate is still not clean!! Yet – even though we are living very similar circumstances leading to the run-up to WW2, the west expects us to welcome the MB killers back into our open arms – and more importantly, to entrust our lives, security and future into their hands again, even while they CONTINUE to call us ‘traitors’ and kill!! There isnt ANY country on earth that would be THAT forgiving…Does it even make any sense to you?? It certainly doesn’t to the Egyptians!

Something else that doesn’t make sense to the Egyptians is the west’s insistence on supporting the MB in spite of everything against the will of the Egyptian people! I understand that each country must act in a way that best services its own personal interests, but to what extent is each country willing to go to achieve them? In our opinion, the west has crossed many lines in this respect, and it is highly regrettable… Egypt is doing everything in its power to protect its sovereign state and its people. As would any other country in the world – and as most certainly any one of the countries criticizing it today would do in the same, or even less dire circumstances…

Anyway, I do hope this someway explains our anger and frustration at the outside’s world’s concentrated efforts to thwart our rights and fight for freedom, liberty and a decent living. Democracies are not born overnight, and when have they ever been bloodless? Compared to history – ours so far are pretty tame.. God willing – it will be over soon and with as little bloodletting as possible.. As absolutely we will all have to live together afterwards, and it is crucial to integrate them (especially the young ones) into society as early as possible.

Thats it!! I have to get up now, and my back is hurting after being bunched up over my computer all this time ;)

Would u believe our ministry of foreign affairs only JUST released a compilation video to international press & beginning to put their PR Plan together? We are our own worst enemies when it comes to timely action & Propaganda use ...

As for the my answer on the solution - I honestly don't know --- it is beyond comprehension just how brainwashed they are... I think, in my humble opinion - is that all their current heads MUST be caught and prosecuted for the heinous crimes they have committed against this country. And to stop them for stoking up more hatred; discord in their ppl. And then, the rest, most crucially, the young children must go to schools  youth clubs, etc ; other places where they can mix & interact with other egyptian ppl - to counter all the medieval hate indoctrines they are fed from the moment they are born by the MB.. For older ones - A decent life with self respect is needed. Partially (I think ) what makes them so susceptible to radicalism & their blind hatred of those around them must come from social & economic deprivation & repression. But when u treat someone like a human being - and start making them feel more complete & fulfilled, then this will be a good step on rehabilitating them..

Which general said killing them all is the solution?? (This article in Le Monde is meant:
Egypte : "Il faut tuer ou arrêter les leaders des Frères musulmans" .) I have not heard this & it would certainly not be well received with mainstream Egyptian public, even though they DESPISE the MB!! Iike I said, I don't KNOW what the solution is - but Egyptians are resilient & in essence, peace loving . We will find a way to mend bridges & move on... But the MB MUST be made to feel that they are EGYPTIAN - not Brotherhood .

Brief uit Egypte / Letter from Egypt

I received this letter from an Egyptian acquaintance who gave me permission to publish it anonymously. I present it to you without any edits, but I omitted the names mentioned. I gather it to be an important document right from the heart of an 'average Egyptian woman'. Since the first second Morsi took office, the MB have systematically been working on weaking on the state institutions and 'brotherhoodising' all the key positions in the cabinet, ministries, central and provincial governnmental offices as well in the police, media and national institutions . They THOUGHT they succeeded in doing so also with the army with El-Sissi's appointment. All the while, they have been undermining the country, wracking up its debt, selling off chunks of the country to foreign countries and organizes. All the while, they have been breeding hatred and discord and civil and religious strife.

Their leaders have come out outright on satellite and state television calling people of other denominations and their opposition 'maggots', 'lice',' heretics & infidels', 'traitors', 'parasites' , 'scum', etc, etc And saying that they should be killed for their opposition to the president, who they treated as a prophet.. Their thugs in the streets, routinely attacked and terrorise opposition figures with total impunity. They have even surrounded and held hostage the media city (full of opposition channels) and the High Court (issued many decrees that displeased the ikhwan) Political activists have been murdered, imprisoned, terrorised or undergone character assassination. And all the while, their satellite channels have been 'justifying the blood of anyone who questions our new prophet on earth Morsi'.

They have made a COMPLETE failure of running the country. Violent crime has gone through the roof, unemployment has doubled, food prices and basic amenities have skyrocketed and there are huge shortages in fuel and power. They have also been trying to change the very character and identity of Egypt and Egyptians - trying to impose the Saudi style extremist Wahhabism onto our moderate adn distincly Egyptian identity. They have also tried to negate our culture and history by trying (and failing) to replace all the heads of our cultural institutions, and attempted to take control of the national archives .

Throughout this year people from literally all walks of life and all professions have been protesting against them. There have been countless strikes, marches and drives and campaigns against them. A grassroots campaign to gather signatures for a no-confidence vote against Morsi gathered 23 million signators over a couple of months. Morsi's supporters and allies have been frightening the public and threatening violence against anyone who participated in the 30 June rallies, and STILL the nation poured into the streets. A coup usually involves the public waking up one morning and finding their city full of tanks and being informed that the army has removed the leader and assumed his powers. Take a look at all the footage. More than a third of the Egyptian population was out in the streets for four solid days DEMANDING that the president step down. This is not a coup, but very much a popular revolution, whereby the army carried out its most basic function which is protecting the people and national security.

About ever having a democratic govt:

We are trying ... Of course, its not going to be easy in a country like ours which is traditionally devout (both Muslims and Christians) and with huge illiteracy problem. The biggest problem here has been ignorance and poverty - both tools used by radicals to sway simple people. 

But we are definitely trying, and judging from the size and diversity of the protestors (old, young, male, female, muslim, christian, conservative, secular, rich , poor - EVERYONE) and the visceral nature of their rejection of the MB and their fake islamist (but real terrorist) allies, then I think we are on the right track, learning by trial and error as we go along!!

 Thank you for publishing my letter - it is greatly appreciated, as quite frankly, we are all frustrated at the double standards of the west in 'demanding democratic behaviour' , while undermining an entire nation's hearfelt and hard fought aspirations & efforts for just that! We are all working towards containing these zealots and fanatics - who have hugely hurt the good name of Islam every bit as much as they have the Egyptian people, with their ugly, backward, divisive hatemongering which is at total odds with the peaceful nature of the religion. Likewise, Egyptians are happy, fun-loving, open, religiously observant and tolerant all at the same time. These malcontents know only fear, regression and violence. It is never far from their discourse and would have us at each other's throats or chopping off people's heads over differences in beliefs and opinions. They are physically and mentally incapable of co-habitating with anyone who is different or whom they cannot subjectify.

De financiele wurggreep van 'Den Haag'.

In een interview in Binnenlands Bestuur (18 januari 2013) zegt Ronald Plasterk dat hij ‘intellectueel de logica inziet’ van de uitbreiding van het gemeentelijk belastinggebied. ‘Maar waar je in deze tijd burgers vraagt de broekriem aan te halen, past het niet om dan de belastingen uit te breiden.’ Ik kan deze gedachtegang van onze bewindsman niet volgen. Het gaat immers niet om een verhoging van de collectieve lastendruk, maar om een verschuiving van rijksbelastingen naar lokale belastingen. Een dergelijke verschuiving lijkt niet meer dan logisch nu er sprake is van een forse decentralisatie van rijkstaken – Wmo, Participatiewet - en er wordt aangestuurd op een ongekende schaalvergroting.

Uit het feit dat ‘Den Haag’ taken naar de gemeenten schuift zonder dat deze meer grip krijgen op hun inkomsten blijkt dat het Rijk de gemeentes niet voldoende vertrouwt en stevig aan de ‘gouden koorden’ van centrale financiering wil vasthouden. De inverdieneffecten die deze decentralisatie met zich mee zou brengen, komen hierdoor in gevaar omdat er een uitgebreid controle- en verantwoordingscircus dreigt. In plaats daarvan zouden de gemeenteraden, als kaderstellend en controlerend orgaan, een belangrijke stem moeten krijgen, maar juist op de lokale democratie wordt fors bezuinigd.  

De Raad voor het Openbaar Bestuur en de Raad voor de Financiële Verhoudingen denken niet dat deze centralistische ‘have the cake and eat it too’-benadering (wel decentraliseren en efficiencywinst inboeken, maar nauwelijks zeggenschap over de wijze van besteding overdragen en geen eigen financiering toestaan) erg vruchtbaar zal zijn en ik denk dat zij daar groot gelijk in hebben. ‘De Raden achten het een gemiste kans dat op geen enkele wijze een opening wordt geboden om het decentraal belastinggebied uit te breiden onder gelijktijdige verlaging van de rijksbelastingen. De mogelijkheden van gemeenten om op enige wijze zelf invulling te geven aan de decentrale taken, eigen afwegingen te maken en risico' s op te vangen zijn daarmee minimaal.’(ROB/RfV, ‘Brief Regeerakkoord 2012, 11 december 2012)

Een opwaardering van de lokale overheid vind ik overigens een verstandige beleidsrichting. De gemeente - als ‘eerste overheid’ - kan veel effectiever en efficiënter lokale taken uitvoeren dan de rijksoverheid. Wat dat betreft geldt de subsidiariteitsdiscussie - beslissingen dienen op een zo laag mogelijk niveau genomen te worden - die de nationale overheid momenteel met ‘Europa’ voert net zo hard voor de verhouding lokaal–nationaal.

Willen de gemeenten echt effectiever worden, dan moeten ze meer zijn dan een soort door het rijk aangestuurde ‘zelfstandige’ bestuursorganen. Gemeenten zouden daadwerkelijk de kosten op de baten moeten kunnen afstemmen. De argumenten voor de vergroting van wat men het ‘lokaal belastinggebied’ noemt zijn bekend: meer ruimte om voorzieningen te bieden die aansluiten op lokale behoeften, meer budgettair verantwoordelijkheidsbesef, grotere keuzevrijheid voor burgers en bedrijven en – last not least - een bevordering van de lokale democratie.

Maar de financiële armslag van gemeenten is de laatste decennia alleen maar verder ingeperkt. Bekend zijn de afschaffing van het huurdersdeel van de OZB en de beperkingen die aan de hoogte van het eigenaarsdeel van die belasting gesteld zijn. De vereveningssystematiek van het Gemeentefonds, waarbij de waarde van het onroerend goed in een gemeente – als indicator voor de belastingcapaciteit - negatief meeweegt in de verdeling van de algemene uitkering, vormt een verdere rem op lokaal initiatief: het grootste deel van de extra belastingopbrengst als gevolg van gemeentelijke investeringen vloeit immers weg.(Zie ook Paul Bordewijk, ‘Verzin een list bij de verevening’, B&G, juli/augustus 2013.) Indien men decentralisatie serieus neemt dan zal ‘Den Haag’ deze wurggreep moeten slaken.

Uiteraard zal het rijk ervoor moeten blijven zorgen dat de voorzieningencapaciteit van de gemeenten onderling gelijk blijft. Een gemeentefonds zal daartoe nodig blijven. Ik voel me gekwalificeerd noch geroepen om te schetsen hoe het ‘lokale belastinggebied van de toekomst’ er idealiter uit zouden moeten zien. Flip de Kam heeft daar veel behartenswaardige beschouwingen aan gewijd. In Wie betaalt de staat? bepleit hij een vergroting van het aandeel van de lokale belastingen als percentage van de totale gemeentebegroting van de huidige 10% tot 25% bij een gelijkblijvende collectieve lastendruk. Hij stelt een gemengd stelsel van OZB ‘oude stijl’ en gemeentelijke opcenten op de inkomstenbelasting of een ingezetenenheffing voor. Deze ‘schets van De Kam’ kan als basis dienen voor een vergroting van het lokale belastinggebied als sluitstuk van de decentralisatie. De tijd is rijp voor een doorbraak, maar dan moet die kans wel gepakt worden.

Een overdracht van financiële bevoegdheden naar het lokaal bestuur zal mijns inziens meer dan wat ook bijdragen aan de door de PvdA nagestreefde ‘participatiestaat’. De wens uit de partijresolutie Over wat van waarde is voor ‘directe invloed van mensen op de publieke voorzieningen en de politiek in hun omgeving’ kan immers alleen tot stand komen als lokale politici ook verregaande invloed op deze voorzieningen hebben. Ook en vooral wat betreft de financiering van die voorzieningen.
